All About Transcendentalism
So what is Transcendentalism? The word itself may seem hard to pronounce or to understand, yet in reality, it is simply just a philosophical movement that unites a group of people to discuss spiritual ideas during mid 18th century. Although there are no formal meetings or rendezvous, Transcendentalists, including authors, thinkers, philosophers, and painters often come together and discuss their opinions and beliefs on certain topics.
The main goal of Transcendentalism is try to break away from religion, since they believe that religion has the ability to restrain one's thinking and restricted their freedom to express their thoughts, they started to suggests that one should not fully follow their religion just because they think it is acceptable. Transcendentalists trust that every person has a universal soul within them and also a unique relationship with God, which means people should be treated equally and they should not be required to be religious in order to communicate with God. By doing so they could transcend and go beyond what they could feel and see.
Transcendentalists were also known as radical yet rebellious thinkers that do not conform to others easily, they try to seek the truth that they believe in and not just generally accept patterns, thoughts, or actions. They simply reject common ideas and conventional living. Instead of setting rules that people need to obey, they have merge concepts and ideas from different religion and encouraged people to do so in order to stay in contact with the universe. Throughout the process of doing so, they have established some of the main ideas of Transcendentalism.
Some of the leading figures of Transcendentalism are Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, John Muir and many others. These authors and poets would include the elements of Transcendentalism in their work and express their opinions upon these ideas. By doing so, they hoped that they could convey these important ideas and thoughts to everyone.
