Self - Reliance
The article Self Reliance written by Ralph Waldo Emerson was said to convey one of the most important ideas of Transcendentalism. Emerson believes that the society is turning people into conformists, which they rely on other peoples' thoughts instead of developing their owns. Due to the laziness that coexists within our genes, we are likely to obey any rules established by the elders without questioning them, even when it would harm us. An example during the 1800's is slavery, because people did not want to be treated as an outsider by the majority, so they stopped asking themselves whether doing such things are acceptable and tolerable . In addition, this also limits the possibility of generating a variety of performances and perspectives on the same idea, which greatly effects the chance of being united and treating everyone equal. According to Emerson, the only ones that are not being categorized as conformists are the young children. They behave in a way that they think they are comfortable and not feel stranded nor bounded, this is because they are not educated and does not have the value to judge whether such things are right or wrong; this results a diversity thinking at their age.
Another idea developed in the article is the reliance on oneself. Emerson believes that when one stops relying on any outside resources or power, they could compose some great ideas that could truly impact the world's perspective. Furthermore the lack of details and descriptions in the story strongly defines the story as universal and has the capacitance to apply to any community or society.
